WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT ME???
What do you know about four brick walls
with no windows and fifteen-minute collect phone calls?
What do you know about twenty-foot-high razor sharp wire fences
or about supervised visits
and being stripped searched after your loved ones leave?
What do you know about getting screamed at and told what to do
by an authority figure who couldn’t walk a day in your shoes?
What do you know about nothing to call your own
or having a two-foot space between you and a stranger
who is sharing a room you now call home?
What do you know about having everything stripped from your life
and always praying you don’t get stabbed when you sleep at night?
But before you cast judgment and say I chose my own path,
let me take a minute to inform you about my life’s past!
What do you know about growing up below poverty level, where the only way to eat
was to sell drugs or commit robbery?
What do you know about wearing hand-me-down clothes
or wearing shoes that are too small for your feet?
What do you know about your parents being gone for hours on a drug-run
and not knowing if you will ever see them again?
What do you know about coming home to mom having a black eye
because dad’s been drinking too much again?
What do you know about freezing in the winter because they’ve turned off your power
or going next doors to the neighbor’s house just to take a hot shower?
What do you know about having to drop out of school
or watching your mom have to degrade herself just to pay the bills?
What do you know about getting kicked out and sleeping on the streets?
What do you know about not having a place to call home or sleeping in hallways just to stay warm?
What do you know about me?
So before you pass judgment about that man that you see,
Ask yourself, What do you know about me???
